Cairn Holy

Oil on canvas, 30x 40cm £180

Cairn Holy chambered tomb in Galloway, one of a pair of Neolithic burial monuments eroded to reveal the inner chamber.

These sculptural forms that bring a focal point to the open landscape, yet something I find fascinating is that today we only see the skeleton of the monument. The earth and smaller stones of the cairn that covered the burial chamber have been weathered away through the centuries, the skin that  hid what was within. Not only are we looking at these monuments with different eyes and understanding, but we are seeing it incomplete; the bones that held the bones.

As the body of the person who was interred within decayed to bones, over a different timescale the monument experienced this same process
